The importance of seaweed in our natural world

Professor Joe Zuccarello discusses his research on algal diversity, genetic variation, reproductive biology and evolution.

July 2021

While important in many ways, seaweeds are poorly studied and much remains to be discovered. Basic biological understanding, even as basic as 'what species is that', is needed before other progress can be made.

In this lecture, Professor Joe Zuccarello from the School of Biological Sciences presents his research on algal diversity, genetic variation, reproductive biology, and evolution. He highlights how basic biology is essential for understanding our natural world and its evolution, and why universities are perfect places to pursue these goals.

This is Professor Zuccarello’s inaugural lecture as Professor of Biology at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
