Ko Jugjeet Singh tōku ingoa, nō Bharat ahau.

Over the last two years I’ve advocated for students as President of VUW Law Students’ Society in 2020, and President of the NZ Law Students’ Association in 2021. As a student representative in these spaces, I understand the ongoing challenges tauira face during COVID-19. I also know how to navigate the bureaucracy of universities.

Global pandemic aside, I am no stranger to the issues students ordinarily encounter when engaging with tertiary education. In particular, tauira Māori, Pasifika students, the immigrant and international communities, as well as rainbow students, are not adequately nor appropriately supported in a colonial institution like this University.

The University Council is the governing body of Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington. It is important that student voices are heard at this table, especially the voices of marginalised student groups. As an immigrant to Aotearoa, I endeavour to be a Te Tiriti partner. Minority groups must back indigenous communities and as a University Council Student Representative, my priority will be uplifting the voices of tauira Māori and holding the University to its promises of true Te Tiriti partnership.
